| 520 | _aThe influence of climate and withered leaves covering the ground on the seasonal abundance of Lutzomyia spp. adults was investigated. Regular sandfly collections were made from 1997-1998 using the Shannon light traps in Catarnica town, Municipio Independencia Táchira State, Venezuela. This town is located in the Andean region close to the Colombian border at 1300 m altitude, in an agricultural area largely exploited for coffee production. According to Holdridge’ s classification, this region is a premontane dry forest. The most abundant anthropophilic species were Lutzomyia spinicrassa with 3.513 individuals (80.8%) and Lutzomyia gomezi with 669 individuals (15.4%). Lutzomyia nuneztovari with 92 (2,1%), Lutzomyia ovallesi with 61 (1,4%) and Lutzomyia shannoni with 11 individuals (0,2%) were less abundant. Leaf litter, relative humidity and precipitation were the variables that mainly influenced the population fluctuations of L. spinicrassa. L. gomezi, L. nuneztovari and L. ovallesi were mainly influence by leaf litter and precipitation, while L. shannoni was affected by precipitation, temperature and leaf litter. Precipitation and leaf litter seem to be determinant on the adult population dynamics of Lutzomyia spp. favoring the breeding and protection to immature stages during the adverse season.(AU) | ||
